H2H owner Richard Hisert PhD, PG led Marietta College students and professors on an eight-day geology trip to mining sites throughout the northeast as student wrapped their spring semester.
Hisert, who received his bachelors of science in geology from Marietta in 1988 and remains an active alumnus, proposed the trip as a way to expose students in the college’s environmental science, geology, and petroleum engineering programs to ways they can apply their degrees in the mining industry and see how their studies are used in real world applications.
The group toured mine sites that varied widely in their size of operations, proximity to local development, and in diversity of geology—from cement and construction aggregate, to marble, garnet, and wollastonite.
“I enjoyed the teaching environment, showing them how important the fundamentals of what they were learning in school applied to how these companies operate on a day to day basis,” said Hisert.
Mines toured included Buzzi Unicem/Hercules Cement in Stockertown, Pennsylvania; Weldon Materials’ quarries in Lake Hopatcong and Watchung, New Jersey; Tilcon New York’s quarries Tomkins Cove and Haverstraw, New York; Callahan-Nannini Quarry in Salisbury Mills, New York; Callanan Industries in South Bethlehem, New York; Vermont Quarries in Danby, Vermont; Barton Mines in North Creek, New York; and Imerys Wollastonite in Lewis, New York.
Seeing firsthand how their knowledge of geological processes and products can be applied both practically and creatively in the mining industry was unique and invaluable opportunity for the students. “They were fascinated by it all,” said Hisert.
H2H is grateful to our mining clients for graciously hosting the group!
